South America

South America is the southern part of the American double continent, has a population of almost 400 million people and, with an area of 17,843,000 km², is the fourth largest continental land area in the world.

The subcontinent is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. The island of Tierra del Fuego at the southern tip of the subcontinent is separated from the neighboring continent of Antarctica by the Drake Strait. Just south of Tierra del Fuego lies Cape Horn, where the Atlantic and Pacific meet. To the north, there is a connection to North America via the Isthmus of Panama.
