North America

North America is the northern part of the American double continent. It is surrounded by the Arctic Ocean to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, the Caribbean Sea to the south and the Pacific Ocean to the west. North America is the third largest continent in the world after Asia and Africa and covers an area of 24,930,000 km² including Greenland, the Central American land bridge and the Caribbean.

South America and North America were named after Amerigo Vespucci. He was the first to realize that the land that Christopher Columbus had discovered and considered to be India was a continent in its own right. The isthmus of Panama connects North and South America. Central America is occasionally referred to as a continent in its own right, but the prevailing opinion is that it is a region such as Western Europe and belongs to North America.
